A University in Transition: The Long Path to Integration

In May of 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court declared public school segregation unconstitutional and ordered schools to integrate “with all deliberate speed” (Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka). This exhibit documents the ways in which the state of Florida and university administration responded to integration. It highlights how outside influences and the mishandling of institutional power delayed integration. It also documents the efforts of students and community members in Tallahassee to ensure equal rights. The long path to integration still impacts students and alumni today. The exhibit ends with a celebration of the change that has occurred and a look at the work that remains to be done.
